CHAPTER 6

The next day, Rick and I went to The Composer hotel with Jackie and Greg tagging along. Brian was all booked for TV show shootings, but Rick felt he alone was enough to keep me from any harm’s way.

The ghost of Ken Damaree was still standing in the center of the garden room. Unlike the last time we’d visited there, the rubble and crushed glass had been removed. The only thing that still remained were the metal columns that used to hold the glass walls and ceiling.

“Hi, Ken!” Jackie flew toward him the moment she recognized him impatiently pacing around.

Ken’s shoulders visibly twitched, and he raised his face. “Oh… hi, Jackie.” He offered a weak smile. “Greg, Mandy, and Rick.”

“How are you?” I knew he was a ghost, but I couldn’t help asking that lame question. I was accustomed to seeing ghosts with pale complexions, but Ken was not just pale but also… transparent, as if he was about to disappear into thin air, and I knew it was different from other ghosts like Jackie, Clara, and Greg excusing themselves. The way Ken looked, he seemed to be seriously disappearing. According to Brian, disappearing ghosts had two options. One was to leave for a better place, and maybe reincarnate into a new person and come back to this side of the world as a baby. But the other option didn’t sound so fun, because it involved being permanently wiped out from the world, and even Brian himself didn’t know what would happen to the deleted soul.

“I’m… dead,” Ken said, looking down at his body. “And I think I’m disappearing.”

“Come on, Ken. Don’t look so sad. You want to cheer up.” Jackie attempted to pat his shoulder, but her hand went through him. Her eyes widened, but other than that, she didn’t show her shock. “It’s okay, Ken. Everything will be fine.” She smiled.

“Yes, she’s right.” Greg joined her, nodding encouragingly.

Rick touched my arm. “How is he doing?”

“He doesn’t look so good,” I whispered, hoping Ken wouldn’t catch my words.

Rick’s eyebrows twitched a little, but then he said, “So, Ken, did you recall what happened before your death?”

“No, I didn’t.” Ken shook his head. “But that’s not the saddest part of my situation.” His forehead wrinkled. “Sorry I’m so depressed. Maybe seeing me in such a condition won’t be good for your baby.”

“Oh, Ken,” I murmured, not really sure what to say. “Has anything happened? You don’t need to worry about me or the baby.”

“Thanks for asking. It’s… nothing,” he mumbled, still looking depressed. No, depressed was an understatement. He looked devastated. “Yesterday, Sarah visited me here. She was crying, telling me how much she loved me, and….”

“Now you’ve recalled who you are?” Rick interjected after I relayed his words.

“Yes and no.” Ken shook his head. “So, I now understand that I used to work as an investment banker, but for me, that’s just a piece of information. It’s like hearing about someone I’ve never met. Actually, I still can’t believe that I was the person you described to me.
